Message to the Media

(JJ HaZe - Minneapolis)

Brett Favre knows that you would rather have your spot on the bandwagon reserved and confirmed. We all know how frustrating is waiting for a bus, especially if you don’t know for sure if and when that bus is even coming.

Favre knows this because he has been a bus driver for a long time now and has picked up and dropped off more passengers than the Staten Island Ferry. Zigy knows that if his bus pulls up to the stop and you hop on to find T Jack behind the wheel, you likely won’t drop your $1.25 into the fare bucket. But If you see Brett behind the wheel you wind up having to stand because of lack of empty seats. Remember, full buses help fund better bus stations. Should Favre care about a new bus station that he will likely never use? Should he care about certain passengers who make too much noise & keep pulling the “next stop rope”?
The best seats on the bus (besides Bus Cook’s seat) always belong to the media. They get to be the back-seat drivers that everyone seems to listen to except hopefully the bus driver. To add to this cliché analogy, sports media “know it alls” also are akin to weathermen in that heir opinions are often stated as if fact, but are rarely attached to accountability. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who can tell you which weatherman holds the record for the most consecutive accurate weather predictions. However, you may find it slightly easier to find someone who can tell you which football player has started in the most consecutive NFL games as well holds the most top performance records for his position.

The fact is that it is much easier to pick up a laptop and tap critical words on a keyboard than it is to pick up a football a carry a team year after year. Now I know that writer’s block can be devastating, but is it as devastating as when an offensive linemen misses a block? leaving a 40 year grandfather susceptible to the fury of a 25 year old 300 lb hungry linebacker? Do you really want to trash talk the decision making skills of a man who has decided which receivers to throw his NFL record 497 touchdown passes to? It’d be futile to continue this age old critique that those who critique can’t do, because I believe that everyone already ‘gets it.’ Writer's and analyst's have jobs to do and those jobs have made it possible for bus drivers to make a lot more money than your average MTC employee.

However, you need to cut this man some slack. It may be a more compelling story if you had some real dirt on this sports icon other than his decision making process isn’t always convenient for everyone. Think about the biggest sports figures in the world today. “Colorado Kobe”, “Loyal Lebron”, “tip her good Tiger,” A-Roid” and Brett Favre –the gunslinger. All five receive around the same amount of media mud on their name, however the only real off-the-field offense that Favre is guilty of is that years ago he was addicted to pain-relief pills. Think about that… people who get addicted to pain relief pills are typically people that experience a lot of pain. This is a financially secure ring-wearing hall of famer that may not want to get re-addicted to pain med's just to drive a bus full of loud, rude, ungratefull passengers, especially, if he is not sure the bus can get you to your desired destination, we should all just be happy that he is even considering it.

Wow, it is SO great to read something by a writer who actually "gets it"! You are right on: "You need to cut this man some slack." You are absolutely correct! Still, I think the fans (and writers) need to realize that Brett is not "holding out" just because he doesn't like training camp; he really has an issue with his ankle not being 100%, and he doesn't want to play at anything but a high level, which everyone expects. He also knows it'll be tough to repeat last year's performance, even with a great team behind him. In the back of his mind, there are also the snide remarks and low blows from some bloggers, some writers, and even some sportcasters; it doesn't bother Brett so much, but he hates the way it hurts his family (e.g., his daughter having a baby without being married). Gee, I guess that makes Brittany the 1st single mother in the whole wide world! Anyway, we'd all better hope he gets better soon, not that T.J. is a bad QB; it's just that #4 is, well...the best!! Go, Vikes!

I think no matter what, we will see #4 this year. weather or not he shows up for training camp, it really doesn't matter, however, I think that he might surprise a lot of people and show up on Friday. Rumor has it, that he is in town, if he wasn't going to report, why would he be here already.. Time will tell!
